We are thrilled to showcase in our Flandrien Gallery the Giant MCR Team Edition, a very rare and unique bicycle designed by the legendary British engineer Mike Burrows. Fitted with a Shimano Dura-Ace 8-speed groupset and Rigida carbon-spoked wheels, this machine is a true icon of mid-1990s cycling design. Its rarity, technical innovation, and connection to professional competition make it one of the most collectible and historically significant bicycles of its era.

The Giant MCR (Multi-Compact Road) Team Edition was born out of Burrows’ innovative approach to frame design, emphasizing compact geometries, lightweight construction, and aerodynamic efficiency long before these principles became mainstream. Unlike conventional frames of the time, the MCR featured a radically shortened top tube and compact rear triangle, which increased stiffness, improved power transfer, and made the bike exceptionally responsive in sprints and steep climbs. Burrows’ goal was to create a machine that allowed riders to attack with precision, corner with confidence, and accelerate with maximum efficiency. Today, the MCR remains celebrated not only for its performance but also for its groundbreaking design philosophy, which influenced the development of road bikes for decades.

This particular MCR Team Edition was used exclusively by Team Topsport Vlaanderen in competition, making it an extraordinary piece of cycling history. Its time on the road was limited: following the introduction of the UCI Lugano Charter in 1996, which restricted unconventional frame geometries, the MCR was effectively banned from road racing. This short-lived competitive history adds to its rarity and prestige. Owning a MCR is like holding a snapshot of cycling innovation frozen in time—a bike that pushed boundaries and directly challenged traditional notions of road bike design.

The bike in our collection is fitted with a Shimano Dura-Ace 8-speed groupset, the pinnacle of professional-grade components at the time. Known for its smooth and precise shifting, Dura-Ace 8s was the choice of elite riders across the peloton, offering reliability in the most demanding racing conditions. Paired with Rigida carbon-spoked wheels, the MCR delivers remarkable responsiveness, lightweight performance, and aerodynamic efficiency. Even today, the combination of Burrows’ compact geometry with high-quality components produces a ride experience that feels ahead of its time, demonstrating why the MCR was—and remains—so highly regarded by collectors and cycling enthusiasts alike.

The MCR’s design aesthetic was as revolutionary as its geometry. The frame’s unique lines, clean junctions, and compact proportions made it stand out in a peloton dominated by traditional diamond frames. Every detail, from the tubing profiles to the carefully engineered carbon seatpost integration, reflected Burrows’ meticulous attention to both performance and visual harmony. The bike’s status as a design icon of the mid-1990s is now universally acknowledged; it embodies an era when engineers were experimenting boldly with geometry, materials, and aerodynamics to redefine what a road bike could be.
