flandrien bicycle gallery – the name

The nickname “Flandrien” was first used to describe the Flemish track cyclists who competed at 6-day races in the USA in the early decades of the twentieth century. The term was later adopted for the gutsy riders from Flanders who dominated the Spring Classics.

From the late 1970s the first “International Flandrien” from countries such as Australia, Ireland, Denmark, the United Kingdom and the USA came to live, train and race in Flanders. One of the very first was the Australian Allan Peiper, and his life and career is celebrated through images and artworks at the Hotel, alongside other Flemish and international cycling legends. Today the term Flandrien is not so much about a nationality but a mentality of grit, determination and perseverance.

And of course, there are no true Flandrien without trusted racing bicycles.  Belgium is an incredible source for classic and ex-pro team bicycles with so many Belgian, Dutch and international teams having their Service Courses in the region.

For example, the Service Courses of teams such as US Postal, Discovery Channel, Radio Shack and Astana were located just a few kilometres from the Flandrien Bicycle Gallery.  Many of the bikes in our collection have raced on the cobbles and climbs of Flanders.
